Sugar vs. Natural Sweenters

Did you know that white sugar is refined over 20 times before it hits your sugar bowl? That means your basic white table sugar is practically over 90% chemical. That doesn't sound so sweet, does it?

According to author Laura C. Martin in her book Green Market Baking: 100 Delicious Recipes for Naturally Sweet and Savory Treats, we should all be baking with organic, seasonal ingredients and natural sweetners. Refined sugar can contribute to everything from diabetes to poor eyesight, eczema, and yeast infections. And, Martin says, it's cheap and addictive. Some of the natural sweetners her recipes rely on are honey, agave nectar, brown rice syrup, barley malt syrup, and maple syrup.

So, in your next tasty sweet treat, try using these natural sweetners vs. your old (and not so safe and appetizing) white refined sugar.
