How much protein do I need?

From YOU Docs Daily

Q. I'm a gym manager. I'm promoting a weight loss diet of 1300–1600 calories and at least 100 grams of protein a day for our women members. Most are over 40. They do cardio and lift weights 3 days a week. One woman's doctor told her the amount of protein I'm suggesting is unhealthy. What do you think?
-- Hailey, Lee’s Summit, MO

A. Your average gym rat will tell you that protein turns to muscle as fast as Tony Stark's suit changes him to Iron Man. But that's comic-book science and just a great way to sell protein shakes.

A fortysomething woman who works out 3 days a week doesn't need 100 grams of protein a day. That's closer to what an athlete needs -- someone who exercises more than an hour in a row, multiple days of the week. Time, not trophies, matters here. Here's how to calculate your clients' needs, and your own (we assume you are fairly active, too). Bump up the basic protein requirement to 0.5 grams per pound. For a 150-pound person, that's 75 grams of protein a day.

Getting more protein than that will just be turned to fat and make you pee a lot. Consuming too much protein can stress your kidneys. Too much animal protein can lead to kidney stones, which are excruciating. Otherwise, serious problems are rare. But why risk them?

Slow down to eat less for better weight control

From the YOU Docs:

If you’re racing to finish every meal like a contestant in Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest (last year the men’s champ crammed down 62 dogs in 10 minutes -- not a good role model), we YOU Docs are here to help you slow down your eating habits and smell the grilled veggies for better weight control. You’ll eat less, enjoy healthy food more, slim down, and boost your health. Try this Grilled Vegetables with Romesco Pesto recipe.

Make your first bite a healthy fat. If you take in 1 to 2 teaspoons of safflower oil, coconut oil, or cod liver oil, or 12 walnut halves (about 70 to 140 calories) 25 minutes before you eat anything, you’ll eat less and consume fewer calories overall. That’s because you get your brain’s “I’m full and happy” center to signal you need less food, which slows down the rate food leaves your stomach. It also increases your feeling of fullness. Snack on these healthy-fat appetizers.
  • Eat slowly. Spend 30 minutes eating. You’ll eat less and feel fuller -- a great combo. Use the YOU: On a Diet menu planner to custom-build satisfying, healthy meals for better weight control.
  • Eat small meals. People who eat more often are thinner than people who don’t, so graze four to six times a day. Drink plenty of water, too! Here's why eating 6 small healthy meals a day is healthier than eating 3 large meals.
  • Eat more veggies, fewer calories. Dish up vegetables that are NOT calorie-dense, such as lettuce, broccoli, kale, and spinach. You can eat a lot. Now that's a fun indulgence that's great for losing weight. Learn how to keep fruits and vegetables fresh longer.
In the pursuit of a younger RealAge and better health, remember: Slow and steady wins the race.

Got a sweet tooth? How to end your sugar cravings

From You DOCS

Here in Sugar Nation, the average American downs 70 pounds of added sugars each year. Sugars are crammed into and hidden in foods you think are good for you (e.g., flavored oatmeal, many yogurts, and fat-free and low-fat salad dressings) — fooling you and fueling your sugar addiction. Read this before switching to sugar substitutes.

Go au naturel. Enjoy the sugar that’s naturally in foods such as fruit, veggies, and 100% whole grains. Try this recipe for whole-grain rotini with asparagus and snap peas.

Be on food label alert. If there is an added sugar in the first five ingredients on the label, avoid that product. Generally, what’s in parentheses doesn’t count in the top five, but if the ingredient has an -ose in it, beware. Dextrose, sucrose, glucose and their aliases (e.g., molasses, high fructose corn syrup, honey, fruit juice concentrate, malt syrup, rice syrup, and evaporated cane juice) are all signs of sugar-loading. Don't fall for these nutritional label tricks.

Say no to candy. Counter your sugar cravings with small portions of nuts, ¼ oz portions of 70% or more dark chocolate, and fruit, such as apples. Spoil your sweet tooth by eating sliced peaches with raspberries, blueberries, and chocolate chips.

Boost brain power to prevent memory loss

From YOU Docs:

Before you find yourself searching to remember, take note. Really, take note! (Writing things down is a big memory boost to prevent Alzheimer's disease and dementia.) You can maintain — even improve — brain power when you hit your prime (45 years and older), and we YOU Docs want you to do so. (How else will you remember what we write in these columns?) Pumping up your brain power helps prevent memory loss.

Your goal is to make your heart strong and your arteries open and flexible for rivers of nutrient-delivering blood. You’ll slow aging of thought-transmitting neurons, and grow — or regrow — your neurons with exercise and some healthy foods. The result: A brain RealAge that even a Jeopardy! champ like Ken Jennings would envy.

To slow age-related mental decline, dig into:
Also amp up your physical activity. Walk at least 10,000 steps a day and rev production of your brain cells’ own Miracle Grow, BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor). You'll end up with more brain cells and better neural connections. You’ll also control blood sugar and blood pressure. (Too high and they beat up your brain.) Dr. Mike's recommended numbers for BP are 115/75; Dr. Oz stays around 110/75.

Test your memory with these mind-stretching brain games.
